Top 5 Things to do in Fiji
Dreaming of a holiday in paradise? With crystalline lagoons, lush rainforest canopies and pristine palm-lined beaches, Fiji offers the ultimate tropical getaway. While there are so many things to love about this South Pacific haven, what we love most is how diverse a holiday here can be – whether you’re seeking a relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, you’ll find your kind of holiday in Fiji.
We truly believe that there’s something for everyone in Fiji, from exploring gushing rivers and snorkelling coral reefs to immersing in local culture and simply doing nothing at all. If you are looking for things to do during your next Fiji holiday, here are five of our favourites!
Explore Denarau Island
In our opinion, no visit to Fiji is complete without spending a day exploring the vibrant Denarau Island. Located just 20 minutes from Nadi, Denarau Island is the largest resort town in the South Pacific! Here you do everything from shopping for local souvenirs and dining along the ocean to challenging your fellow travellers to a game of golf!
Visit Port Denarau for the best shopping in Fiji. Be sure to visit the various outlets and duty-free stores to browse for handcrafted Fijian souvenirs, clothing and artwork, as well as for wines and food treats. Speaking of food, Port Denarau is also a great place to dine, with plenty of waterfront restaurant options to give you a break from all of the resort food.
Still looking for more to do on Denarau Island? The Big Bula Waterpark offers a thrilling day out for the whole family, while the 18-hole course at Denarau Golf & Racquet Club is a pretty great way to spend an afternoon. Denarau Island is also home to a host of cultural, island and spa experiences, but more on that later!
Embark on a Sigatoka River Safari
For those who love an action-packed holiday, we recommend visiting the town of Sigatoka, where you can embark on an epic river safari adventure. Sigatoka is the largest town on Fiji’s Coral Coast and acts as an important commercial hub for local farming communities. As mentioned, the highlight here is the Sigatoka River, the longest waterway on the main Fijian island of Viti Levu.
Considered one of Fiji’s most highly awarded tourist activities, the Sigatoka River Safari blends an authentic Fijian cultural experience with an exhilarating adventure. Your day will be filled with 360-degree jet boat spins, sampling traditional kava and learning about the everyday happenings in a Fijian village.
Upon arrival in Sigatoka town, you’ll step aboard a custom-built safari jet boat to cruise your way up the magnificent Sigatoka River. Along the way, you’ll learn about the region’s rich history – including its cannibal past! – and visit an authentic Fijian village to meet the Chief and take part in a traditional kava ceremony. What we love most about this tour is that it visits a different village each day, to minimise the impact of mass tourism in such a remote region of the world!
Snorkel in colourful coral reefs
Snorkelling is a must on any Fiji holiday! Boasting an incredible fringing coral reef ecosystem, the clear blue lagoons of Fiji are home to thousands of sea life species, from tropical fish to sea
turtles. Whether you want to swim directly from a stretch of white sand beach or take a scenic boat ride to the dramatic outer reefs, Fiji’s snorkelling experiences are top-notch.
Some of our favourite snorkelling spots in Fiji include the Mamanuca Islands, the Yasawa Islands and the Beqa Lagoon on the Coral Coast. However, if you’re travelling with My Fiji, you can’t miss the My Fiji Island Experience. One of My Fiji’s most popular offerings, you’ll set sail to the idyllic Tivua Island to enjoy an unforgettable day in paradise, complete with activities, tours and beachside butler service! The reefs surrounding the island are teeming with marine life, so we highly suggest making the most of the snorkelling facilities during your visit.
Immerse yourself in Fijian culture
There’s nothing quite like connecting with the local culture while travelling, and Fiji’s cultural ceremonies always offer a special holiday moment. While most resorts in Fiji host a Fijian cultural night – which you definitely should not miss – we highly recommend also checking out the Fiji Untold Show, held at VOU HUB, the premier entertainment and cultural hub in Fiji.
This song and dance extravaganza is considered Fiji’s top stage show and is hosted inside an enormous 450-seat Big Top tent at VOU HUB Fiji. The show begins with a live drumming display, and you’ll soon be drawn into a mesmerising song and dance performance that mixes contemporary and traditional elements. Trust us when we say that this spectacular show will give you a deeper understanding and connection to Fiji!
Make the most of Fiji Time
Although there are endless things to do in Fiji, one of the best things is to simply do nothing at all! Embracing the relaxed concept of ‘Fiji Time’ is key to making the most of every precious moment in paradise.
A Fiji holiday offers plenty of opportunities to kick back and relax. In our opinion, it doesn’t get much better than sipping cocktails in your glistening resort pool or lazing on a sun-drenched beach with a book in hand. We also suggest treating yourself to a spa day – the traditional Fijian Bobo Massage will change your life!
Again, if you’re travelling with My Fiji, there’s no better place to embrace ‘Fiji Time’ than Malamala Beach Club. Located just 25 minutes from Denarau Island, Malamala is the world’s first beach club located on its very own island and is the perfect place to relax! When you visit with My Fiji, you’ll even gain access to the exclusive My Fiji deck, where you can lounge on a luxurious private cabana, sip hand-crafted cocktails by the resort-style infinity-edge pool, enjoy an exquisite meal from the a-la-carte menu and have every need met by dedicated butlers. Sounds like heaven to us!
