Best Hiking Spots in Fiji
Fiji, the land of happiness, is so much more than just pristine beaches, turquoise waters and five-star resorts. This tropical paradise is also home to some truly breathtaking hiking trails, including those through lush rainforests, rugged mountains and steep sand dunes, each allowing you to experience to beauty of Fiji from a different perspective.
Are you a keen hiker ready to hit the trails? Here are eight of the best hiking spots in Fiji.
Mount Tomanivi Hike
If you’re up for the ultimate challenge, don’t miss the chance to tackle Fiji’s highest peak. Standing at 1,324 metres, Mount Tomanivi is an extinct volcano positioned in the northern highlands of Fiji’s main island. Head out on a 4WD to the base of the mountain, before braving the steep climb through the forest to the peak. Here, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views that stretch out to the neighbouring islands and mountains beyond – we won’t be surprised if your jaw drops.
My Fiji hiking tip: Get a guide to lead you along the steep terrain to the summit. Allow five to six hours to complete this hike.
Mount Batilamu Trail
The Mount Batilamu Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Fiji. Just an hour from Denarau Island in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, this mountain is the fourth highest in Fiji. Wind through verdant rainforest along a three to four-hour track to the summit, passing picturesque waterfalls and hidden swimming spots along the way. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies at the top to enjoy mesmerising views over Nadi Bay and the surrounding mountains.
My Fiji hiking tip: Arrange to stay overnight in the rustic cabin at the mountain’s summit for unbelievable sunset and sunrise views.
Nausori Highlands
Inland from Denarau Island and Nadi are the Nausori Highlands, a rugged region of rolling hills, river valleys and cascading waterfalls, joined together with tiny villages that teem with custom and tradition. Also known as the Valley of a Thousand Hills, this mountain range provides keen hikers a choice of scenic walking, trekking and off-roading excursion opportunities.
My Fiji hiking tip: The Nausori Highlands offer various hikes to different viewpoints and waterfalls, however the best way to explore is with a tour group or local guide.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes Walk
The various trails of Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Fiji’s first national park, are a spectacular hiking option on the Coral Coast. Standing between 20 and 60 metres tall, these coastal sand dunes were shaped by a millennium of weather elements, such as persistent river erosion, prevailing trade winds and powerful ocean currents. Opt for the quick, one-hour loop to reach the dunes or extend your trip and tackle the three-hour loop to check out additional lookouts and bird-watching spots.
My Fiji hiking tip: Visit in the mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid the Fijian heat, plus be sure to pack lots of sunscreen and water!
Lavena Coastal Walk
If you ever find yourself on the island of Taveuni, be sure to tackle the Lavena Coastal Walk. This beginner-friendly hike takes approximately three hours return, passing traditional local villages, vine-covered jungles and empty white and black sand beaches. At the end of the walk, treat yourself to a dip in the gorgeous Wainibau Falls, however, keep in mind that you’ll need to cross a creek to get here.
My Fiji hiking tip: Prefer a one-way hike? You can arrange a boat transfer back to the starting point at Lavena Village before you hit the trail.
Tavoro Waterfall Hike
Known as the Garden Isle, Taveuni is brimming with astonishing waterfalls, but the triple cascades of Tavoro Falls are by far the most famous. Located in Bouma National Heritage Park, you can opt to hike to one or all three of the waterfalls. The first and tallest waterfall is just a 10-minute hike along a manicured pathway while reaching the second two involves a three-hour hike along a steep and sometimes slick trail across a stream and into the forest.
My Fiji hiking tip: The trek to the second and third waterfalls can be challenging and is best suited to experienced hikers.
Colo-i-Suva Forest Park
Less than 20 minutes from the Fijian capital of Suva is Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, one of the best spots for light hiking in Fiji. The perfect escape from the bustling city, Colo-i-Suva Forest Park offers over six kilometres of walking trails, with plenty of opportunities to witness local flora and fauna. The most popular loop takes around two hours to complete and takes you to some refreshing natural swimming holes.
My Fiji hiking tip: Enhance your visit by booking a guided tour with a ranger to learn more about the wildlife found in Colo-i-Suva Forest Park.
Waya Island Walks
Thanks to the region’s volcanic roots, the Yasawa Islands also offer some breathtaking hiking trails, perfect for those looking for a break from beach lazing and resort relaxing. In particular, Waya Island has several tracks that meander through the hills and along the coast. Many resorts in the Yasawas offer guided hiking excursions, making it easy for you to check out the best viewpoints.
My Fiji hiking tip: Get up early – the peaks of Waya Island are one of the best sunrise spots in all of Fiji!
