Culture Awaits Off the Beaten Track
Embark on a Fijian adventure as you ride ATV bikes down the ‘Road Less Travelled’ on an Off-Road Cave Safari. During this unique experience, you will venture deep within Fiji’s vast interior, while learning about the cannibalism history of Fiji’s largest cave system, the Naihehe Cave. Â
Departing six days a week from the Coral Coast town of Sigatoka, this half-day tour is ideal for anyone seeking an authentic Fiji adventure. Â
What is the Naihehe Cave?
Naihehe Cave is the largest subterranean cave system in Fiji. Meaning ‘a place to get lost’, the Naihehe Cave has home to the Sautabu people during Fiji’s tribal war days. Â
At this time, the tribespeople used the cave system to seek refuge and hide from their enemies. Due to the cave’s nature fortress characteristics that prevented attackers from entering on masse, the clan were successfully able to defend themselves against many enemies over the centuries. You’ll learn all about this intriguing history during the Off-Road Cave Safari. Â
The Off-Road Cave Safari Experience
Your Off-Road Cave Safari experience will begin with a short drive from Sigatoka Town to the river safari jetty. From here, you will jump in and buckle up in a modern ATV, where you will journey deep into the Sigatoka Valley. Â
Before venturing into the Naihehe Cave, you will spend some time in a local Fijian village, where you’ll meet the Bete (high priest) and enjoy a traditional kava ceremony in his home. The priest’s family have been the traditional keepers of Naihehe Cave for centuries, and it is said that if you enter the cave without seeking their blessing first, you will get lost. Â
After the ceremony, you’ll be guided into the historical phenomenon of the Naihehe Cave, where you’ll view relics of Fiji’s cannibal past, before returning to the Bete’s home for a fresh barbecue lunch. Â
